About our Hunter and Son church organ

Our significant and historic pipe organ was built in London in 1897 by the boutique organ building firm of A. Hunter and Son, at a cost of nearly 900 pounds.

The instrument was installed in our church in early 1898 and was formally opened with a grand concert on 22 February 1898 that featured prominent Sydney musicians of the day.

Our Hunter and Son organ is now of national significance as it is the largest example of the firm’s work in Australia remaining in original condition. It is also the last instrument exported to Australia by the firm, which existed from 1854 to 1937.

This organ is unique and the only surviving Australian example of a three manual (keyboard) organ by the boutique organ building firm of A. Hunter & Son of London. The organ employs a sophisticated tubular-pneumatic action. The Hunter firm was famous for the quality of the instruments it produced and particularly for its tubular-pneumatic actions, often suggested as being second to none! This organ was the last of 10 organs sent to New South Wales between 1879 and 1898. It comes from the firm’s golden age and is regarded as still being in original condition.

Above the console, on the impost rail, is a brass plaque that reads:

To the Glory of God

This organ was erected by the Free Will offerings of the people, presented on two Sundays – August 2, 1896 and June 20, 1897
