  • Pews on the move at Summer Hill?

    18 February, 2010

Some of the pews that are in storage in the church buildingYou may have seen an article in the Inner West Courier (Feb 18, page 3) which featured our church as we seek to remove 19 of our pews. If you missed the article, you can see it online here.

For more information about these pews, download this fact sheet .

With the advice of our heritage architect the plan is to replace only 19 of the church's 72 pews with individual seating that will free up space to be used by people. These 19 pews are currently in storage at the sides of the church building and the stage in the church hall and have not been used in regular Sunday services since the late 1980's.

We love our pews and are always going to keep a mix of pews and individual seating. Peter Lechlein, member of Parish Council says "This is a decision that the Parish Council believes conserves the heritage of the church while accommodating the growth of ministry at Summer Hill."

The process that the church goes through for obtaining diocesan permission, called a faculty, is one where we allow people in the community to ask questions and we listen to people who might have any interest at all in the decision. We invite and value dialogue on decisions like these. The application for a faculty by the Parish Council is the first step on this path of dialogue. We would be happy to show you the current situation with our pews, please contact the office to organise a convenient time.

If we proceed to sell the pews we would love them to be kept in the local area and for people around Summer Hill to buy them from us and look after them if they have the opportunity to do so. If people are interested in purchasing a pew they can contact the church office.
  • Kid's Church group Launches today!

    7 February, 2010

Kid's church has had a very exciting start to the year.

Today we launched the five groups in Kid's Church that are running this year. The group names are based on the seasons seeing as we have one season in our name 'Summer Hill.' The group age ranges are Summer Sunbeams 0-2's, Autumn leaves 3-4's, Winter Eskimos K-2 and Spring Boards Years 3-5 and a yet to be named year 6-8 group, that is part of FUEL (Summer Hill's Youth group).

Each group has two fantastic Christian leaders who are committed to teaching and caring for the children. This week Autumn leaves are learning about how Jesus heals sick people from the gospel of Mark and the Winter Eskimos and Spring Boards are learning about Abraham and the promises of God as they cover the story of the bible in 10 easy lessons. It's going to be a great week, can't wait to see you there!

The programs are held during Morning Church every Sunday. For more information, check out the Kid's church page.
